Mother Teresa,born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu on August 26,1910,in Skopje,which was then part of the Ottoman Empire (present-day North Macedonia),and died in 5th September 1997 in kolkata,is an iconic figure in the world of humanitarianism.Better known as Mother Teresa,she dedicated her life to serving the poorest of the poor and founded the Missionaries of Charity,a religious congregation that would touch the lives of countless individuals worldwide. 

Early Life and Calling: 

Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu's early years were marked by her fascination with the stories of missionaries and their selfless service in Bengal.By the age of 12,she was convinced that her calling was to commit herself to religious life.Little did she know that this calling would lead her on a remarkable journey of compassion and love. 

At the age of 18,Anjezë left her home to join the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland,where she learned English with the intention of becoming a missionary.In 1929,she arrived in India and began her novitiate in Darjeeling,in the lower Himalayas.She learned Bengali and taught at St.Teresa's School near her convent.It was during this time that she took her first religious vows on May 24,1931,choosing the name Teresa in honor of Thérèse de Lisieux,the patron saint of missionaries. 

Teresa's journey continued,and she took her solemn vows on May 14,1937,while serving as a teacher at the Loreto convent school in Calcutta. Although she enjoyed her work as a teacher,she was deeply moved by the poverty surrounding her in Calcutta,particularly during the Bengal famine of 1943 and the violence of the August 1946 Direct Action Day. 

The Birth of Missionaries of Charity:

In 1946,during a visit to Darjeeling,Mother Teresa experienced what she described as "the call within the call." She felt compelled to leave the Loreto convent and help the poor while living among them.With unwavering faith, she asked for and received permission to embark on this new mission. 

In 1950,Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity,an order of nuns dedicated to serving "the hungry,the naked,the homeless,the crippled,the blind,the lepers,all those people who feel unwanted,unloved,uncared for throughout society." The order adopted a simple white sari with two blue borders as their habit,a symbol of their commitment to serving those in need. 

A Life of Service: 

Mother Teresa's journey of service was marked by selflessness and love.She opened her first hospice in 1952,converting an abandoned Hindu temple into the Kalighat Home for the Dying, where the poor and sick received medical attention and the opportunity to die with dignity according to their faith.She also opened a hospice for those with leprosy called Shanti Nagar (City of Peace),and established leprosy-outreach clinics throughout Calcutta. 

Her efforts quickly attracted attention and support.By the 1960s,the Missionaries of Charity had expanded,opening hospices,orphanages,and leper houses throughout India. Mother Teresa's compassion knew no borders,and in the 1970s,the congregation expanded its mission to countries in Asia,Africa,and Europe,including the United States.

Recognition and Controversy: 

Throughout her life,Mother Teresa received numerous awards and honors for her tireless service.She was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Peace Prize in 1962 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.Her work was admired by many, but she was not without controversy.She faced criticism for her views on abortion and contraception,as well as concerns about the conditions in her facilities for the dying. 

Legacy and Canonization: 

Mother Teresa's legacy continues to inspire people around the world to engage in acts of kindness and compassion.Her devotion to the poor and marginalized left an indelible mark on humanity.On September 4,2016,she was canonized by the Catholic Church as Saint Teresa of Calcutta. 

Mother Teresa once said, "Spread love everywhere you go.Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier." Her life exemplified this philosophy,and her memory lives on as a beacon of hope,kindness and love for all.
